Acting Audition Information

Advancing your acting skills

Admission to the BFA acting program is competitive. Each year, approximately 16 students are accepted for the BFA acting track option. While exceptional talent is important, it's also important to note that the department is not always looking for readiness for the profession, but the readiness to train for the profession.

During your audition experience the department encourages you to:

  • Leave your ego at the door, be yourself
  • Allow the day to be an enjoyable one

If you are interested in applying for both the BFA acting and BFA musical theatre programs, please view the musical theatre audition page and follow the audition protocol.

Audition purpose

The audition process provides us with an opportunity to evaluate your potential and our ability to educate you with respect to a career in theatre, film, and television. The process also affords you the chance to decide if our program is best suited to your goals and abilities.

Audition protocol

The audition for the acting track option in the BFA theatre and dance program will include the following activities:

  • Monologues — Prepare two contrasting monologues, not to exceed a combined total of three minutes. These selections should not require props. They should be appropriate to your age, and be prepared and memorized. Please review the Audition Guidebook for helpful suggestions.
  • Interviews — Following your monologues, there will be an opportunity for discussion among our faculty. The discussion will allow you to talk informally with faculty and discover what Missouri State University and you have to offer one another.
    • You may be asked to briefly discuss the choices and/or characters of your audition pieces.
    • You may be asked to re-perform one of your audition pieces with defined adjustments.
