H2$ Review: "Worth Seeing"

From the Springfield News-Leader:

"How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical comedy now playing at Missouri State University's Coger Theatre, succeeds in much the same way as its affable anti-hero, J. Pierrepont Finch.

Just as Finch works his way up the corporate ladder without breaking a sweat, relying more on native charm and wily manipulation than actual business acumen, the show lures you into its cheery satire of the 1960s business world with bouncy tunes and breezy comic plotting that can seem well-crafted rather than truly inspired.

With the right cast, though, the amusing book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, and the catchy music and clever lyrics by Frank Loesser still work their spell. The talented group of actors under Michael Casey's capable direction put an enjoyably youthful slant on the material, with even head honcho J.B. Biggley portrayed as a good-looking young man who just happens to have an odd affection for knitting, garish golfing duds and sentimental college anthems of the 1920s.
